Class Description

We are hosting our first ever DOLLY Sewing retreat! It’s in Lewes, on the doorstep to the South Downs in the beautiful and serene Southover Gallery. The emphasis of the retreat is the visible mending skill of Sashiko stitching. Sashiko is the beautiful art of mending and reinforcing worn areas of clothing using patches and rows of little running stitches (sashiko literally means ‘little stabs’) We’ll be immersing ourselves in the mindful slowness and creativity of this enduring technique amongst alike keen stitchers. Together we’ll spend the day embracing and celebrating wear and tear and sharing our sustainable clothing stories. We, at DOLLY believe there’s a wealth of power in a tiny needle and thread – loved clothes that last are part of the change we need to protect our planet and respect the people who craft our clothes. A little bit about me… I am founder of DOLLY Sustainable Clothing Hub in Lewes, East Sussex. Amongst all things sustainable clothing we run a thriving bespoke mending, darning and alteration service with a mission to encourage connection and thoughtfulness in keeping clothes. About the day: Time: 10am-6pm Cost: £145 Max: 12 participants We’ll begin the day with introductions over coffee and pastries and spend the rest of the day stitching! There’ll be a couple of breaks throughout the day - one to enjoy a delicious lunch and the other (weather permitting) to take a short breather outside in the beautiful Grange Gardens a stones throw from our venue. We’ll wrap up the day at 5.30pm over a glass of fizz and show n' tell! Bring along any clothes in need of love and care and any precious fabric offcuts you’d love to use (woven cloth works best). No need to bring anything else! We'll supply our beautiful range of fabric offcuts and everything you need for an indulgent day all to yourself and your needle and thread!
